'Anora' Reigns Supreme at the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards, Setting the Stage for Oscar Glory

The indie film world gathered under the California sun as Hollywood's most celebrated independent voices took center stage in Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA — February 22, 2025

The Santa Monica Pier once again became the epicenter of independent cinema as the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards unfolded on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon — and one film stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Sean Baker's Anora dominated the milestone ceremony, claiming wins for Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Lead Performance for star Mikey Madison Gold Derby — a triumphant sweep that sent a clear message to Hollywood ahead of the Academy Awards.

Anora's Unstoppable Awards Run

Baker, a self-described "indie lifer," used his Best Director acceptance speech to sound an urgent alarm: "Indie film is struggling more than ever," he told the crowd, adding that the current system is "completely unsustainable" for the artists who help shape Hollywood's cultural zeitgeist. "We shouldn't be barely getting by. The system has to be changed." Deadline

Madison, visibly moved by the moment, reflected on an extraordinary journey: "It's been a really interesting year since May. Even just going to Cannes Film Festival was a dream of mine, a career-long dream. Everything that's followed has been a lovely surprise." Deadline

In clinching the Best Feature trophy, Anora bested fellow Oscar Best Picture nominees Nickel Boys and The Substance, as well as Sing Sing and I Saw the TV Glow. Gold Derby

Eyes Now Turn to Oscar Night

Backstage With the independent film community firmly behind Baker and Madison, all eyes now turn to Hollywood's biggest night to see if Anora's indie spirit can conquer the Oscars as well.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards remain a powerful cultural barometer — a reminder that some of cinema's most vital and daring storytelling happens far outside the walls of the major studios.
